Hell on Two Wheels comes to the San Diego Century Bike Ride

April 19, 2011

SAN DIEGO, CA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

San Diego Century Bike Ride announces partnership with Hell on Two Wheels author

The San Diego Century Bicycle Tour is pleased to announce a partnership with author and cyclist Amy Snyder, who wrote the acclaimed book, Hell on Two Wheels, which focused on the annual Race Across America (RAAM) from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. This 3,000-mile nonstop bike race has been called “the toughest test of endurance in the world” by Outside Magazine.

Snyder will be signing a limited number of free copies of her book about this grueling, cross-country odyssey during the San Diego Century Bicycle Tour, to be held Saturday, May 21 in Encinitas. She is also writing articles for the event website: www.sdcentury.com.

In 2009, Snyder followed a handful of athletes before, during and after the RAAM event, the closest and most controversial in history. Snyder’s book is a thrilling and remarkably detailed account of their ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies.

“We’re thrilled that Amy will be present at this year’s San Diego Century Bicycle Tour,” said event organizer Jim Curl. “Not only will she be participating in the ride, she will bring copies of her outstanding book which has certainly raised the profile of cycling in this country.”

“The San Diego Century is my ‘home’ century and I do it every year,” said Snyder, who lives in La Jolla. “At the start of the ride, the same thought always enters my head: ‘Only a few hours ‘till the ice cream and cookies at Mile 61, then downhill to the coast.’”

The fifth annual San Diego Century Bicycle Tour, beginning and ending at MiraCosta College, features a choice of three distances (37, 66, or 103-mile routes), along with exhibitor booths, tasty cuisine and live music.

The San Diego Century Bicycle Tour, produced by Event Media, Inc., will conclude an exciting week of cycling in the county as the week of May 16-20 has been proclaimed “Bike to Work” week in San Diego. One of the noted riders in the San Diego Century Bicycle Tour will be the Hon. Jerome Stocks, Chairman of SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) and Encinitas Councilperson, who is an ardent supporter of “Bike to Work” week. He will be riding the 103-mile course alongside his 15-year-old son, James.

About San Diego Century Bicycle Tour

The San Diego Century Bicycle Tour is a choice of 37, 66, or 103-mile bicycle ride through North County San Diego coast and east county.  New this year is the Taste the Hills Festival, where cyclists, family and friends can enjoy outstanding food, fun and music at MiraCosta College in Cardiff, California.

The cycling courses provide riders with an opportunity to taste the hills with both varying elevation gains and tasty cuisine at the aid stations and finish line.  Hills on the courses range from moderate on the 37-mile course to challenging on the 103-mile course.

A portion of proceeds from the ride help support the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition — www.sdcbc.org — a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to making bicycling better in greater San Diego. For more information on the San Diego Century Bicycle Tour, visit: www.sdcentury.com.
