Century Ride Training March 12 – San Diego and Orange County

Trek Century Ride Training Program

Trek Century Ride Training 2011

If you ride in Orange County we’ve now got a crew that can help you train for the San Diego Century.  This weekend’s group ride training includes both San Diego and Orange County groups.  Keep reading for details on joining the bike ride in the OC.  If you need a training plan, grab the free PDF below from Coach John Howard.

Last Saturday featured sunshine and warm weather, with the first bike ride in the program where jackets and arm warmers weren’t needed for the entire ride. The weather was so nice, there was plenty of pale skin exposed to the spring like temperatures. And while the ride didn’t have any long, sustained climbs, the many short hills took their toll on the riders and offered ample challenge to those who came out.

This week, we’ll be returning to Del Dios Highway but instead heading down it, we’ll be climbing up it as we head east on our way to Escondido.  The 50 miles include coastal scenery and some hill challenges on the big loop back to MiraCosta College.

With the support of the dedicated Ride Guides organized in partnership with the Trek Bicycle Superstores in San Diego, every cyclist who attends will find a group to ride with and improve, at no charge. The ride guides split riders into pace groups that range from 18-20+ mph to 10 mph, and also take care of every group to make sure no one is left behind, or without help when those inevitable flats and mechanical issues occur. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a beginner, there is a group that you can ride with.

Zack and Team OC are sending 8 riders to the San Diego Century this year, so first of all, thank you!  They also train every year for the 7 day San Francisco to Los Angeles AIDS LifeCycle (ALC) ride in June.

Team OC has also been revamping their website and you can find ride schedules and route sheets online at (  They are happy to help any fellow riders training for the San Diego Century in Orange County or surrounding areas.  ALC participation is not a requirement.  They are currently up in the 40+ mileage range culminating in late May with rides between 75 – 103 miles.  And rumor has it there will be midweek rides after the time change.

Visit the TeamOC website for details on the March 12 ride starting in Irvine (45 or 53 mile routes).
